Wigan 0 Oswestry 8

Wednesday 18th November 2009, 10:34AM GMT.

Oswestry served notice that they are getting to grips with South Lancs/Cheshire 1 as they won 8-0 at Wigan to record back-to-back victories.

It is the first time the Eagles have done that this season, and they achieved it with a hard-working team performance.

They took the lead 20 minutes in, when a move started on the right wing saw the ball moved across the line to Rob Massam, who broke three strong tackles to score.

Wigan had the chance to respond quickly, but their penalty came back off the post and was grounded safely behind the line.

The hosts enjoyed 20 minutes of pressure after the break, but could not find a way through Oswestry’s well-organised defence.

And, with five minutes to go, the Shropshire side secured the win when the pack set up Andy Howell for a sweetly-struck drop goal.

Market Drayton had North Midlands president Steve Guy as a guest for their Midlands 5 West (North) clash with Five Ways Old Edwardians.

And he certainly brought them some good luck, Drayton running out impressive 57-0 winners to stay on top of the table.

Coach Rob Thomas was not entirely convinced by the performance, insisting his team had only actually played “properly” for about 20 minutes.

But that proved more than enough as they ran in nine tries.

Going over were skipper and No 8 Chris Spencer (2), centre Ally Mackintosh (2), open side Jack Tavernor, scrum-half Matt Eardley, right winger Mez Burns,

full-back Tom Lavender, and stand-off James Spencer – who also converted six of the tries.

Clee Hill suffered disappointment in Midlands 5 West (SW) as they went down 22-10 away to Birmingham Civil Service.

That was particularly disappointing for Clee, with their opponents having not won a game all season before the weekend.
