Town set to become Middle Earth
Wednesday 18th November 2009, 12:00PM GMT.
A town in Mid Wales is to be turned into a bit of Middle Earth next summer with the launch of a festival based on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
Machynlleth will play host to thousands of fans of the classic fantasy tale who have grown to vast numbers since the books were turned into a series of blockbuster films over the past decade.
The man behind the festival is Mark Faith who believes between 5,000 and 10,000 people could be attracted to the three-day event from all over the world.
The American, who has been living near Machynlleth for the past five years, said: “I am a big Tolkien fan and also one of the bigger Tolkien book and art memorabilia dealers. I thought the general public ought to have a chance to see our original art and signed books.”
Local county councillor Michael Williams said: “I’m a huge fan of Tolkien and I think this festival will bring great things for the town of Machynlleth and surrounding areas.”
The festival will be based in the grounds and mansion of Y Plas from August 13 to 15, 2010 and will include a variety of stalls, Tolkien inspired re-enactments and other fantasy related events. For more information visit www.festivalintheshire.com

As the Wrekin was Tolkin`s true inspiration for Middle Earth, I think Telford has missed out here.

I think it will be a blast no matter where it’s held; I hope people attend and make it an annual tradition. Like anything, you’ll get people criticizing it’s location, but it’s intention is for people to have FUN, so I hope that’s what happens. I’m definitely going to try to fly there next summer!
