A man threatened at knifepoint by two men who burst into his Telford home as he lay in bed today welcomed the jail terms handed out to the robbers.
Robin Wilkinson, who was attacked with a table leg and threatened with being cut by Antony Wiggan and Jolam Hall at his Muxton home, said he was pleased by the length of their sentences behind bars.
Wiggan, 24, of Spring Hill Crescent, Madeley, and Hall, 23, of Mannerley Lane, Overdale, denied the offence but were convicted in September.
Yesterday Wiggan was jailed for seven-and-a-half years and Hall for nine years at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
Mr Wilkinson said: “I am happy with the result. I want to thank Detective Constable Matt Arnold and acting Detective Sergeant Jo Keen-an for what they have done.”
The 59-year-old’s mother, Irene, who was 80 at the time of the robbery in November last year, was marched back into her room after she came out to see what the commotion was.
The car sprayer, who said he had recovered from what had happened, added his mother, who is now 81, was still shocked by her ordeal.
Acting Detective Sergeant Keenan, of Telford CID, who led the investigation, said: “We are very pleased with the sentencing. The main reason being the devastating impact the robbery has had on the family.
“Irene Wilkinson is now 81 and has lived in that house for 45 years and she no longer feels safe living there.
“This has just absolutely devastated her and targeting people, especially elderly victims in their own home, is despicable and we are glad they have had a severe sentence for this.”
She said the incident had had an effect on Mr Wilkinson, who was targeted by somebody who knew him and whom he had, in the case of Hall, treated like a member of his family.
She said the robbers, whom she described as “dangerous” had not admitted their involvement in the ro- bbery until after they were found guilty and had tried to blame others. It meant Mr Wilkinson had to go to court and relive his ordeal.
“They attacked Mr Wilkinson in his house,” she said. “He has got health issues. He described in his statement and in the evidence he gave in court how he felt he was going to die on that night.” She said Mrs Wilkinson, was too frightened to go to court.
