Flood barriers to be erected

Wednesday 18th November 2009, 4:05PM GMT.

Flood barriers were due to be installed tonight in Shrewsbury after rising river levels sparked a flood warning.

Environment Agency officials were due to put up Phase One of the Frankwell flood defences at 6.30pm.

The move comes after days of heavy rainfall which has seen the river level breach the flood warning threshold.

A spokeswoman for the agency said the Frankwell short-stay car park would be closed this evening.

This could pose problems for theatre-goers visiting the Severn Theatre to see Julian Lloyd-Webber tonight.

Phase One is the lowest level of the demountable barriers.

Looking at BBC Radio Shropshire and I quote

“A spokeswoman for Shropshire Council said Theatre Severn visitors would be able to use the two car parks as they would remain open until after Wednesday evening’s performance”

    Looking at the Shropshire Star

“This could pose problems for theatre-goers visiting the Severn Theatre to see Julian Lloyd-Webber tonight.”

Somthing tells me shropshire star made this up!

We actually said (and I quote):

“A spokeswoman for the agency said the Frankwell short-stay car park would be closed this evening.”

In what way have we made this up? We have reported the information we were given.

If you think we “make it up” I suggest you don’t visit this website.

Well spotted Barry. Yet another case of the Shropshire Star attempting to scare monger and make people panic. Instead of getting a quote about how the flooding will affect the Theatre from the Theatre or Council they have just made an assumption designed to whip up panic in order to sell more newspapers….

Shropshire Star should remember they are not The Sun! Local people actually rely on the newspaper for up to date correct info!

For the second time, it is a report of what the the Environment Agency spokesman said.

We have not made an “assumption”; we have reported the spokesman’s words.

Andrew, surely as journalist you could have investigated what the agency had quoted, and maybe got a timescale ? also is it not the council that own the car parks ? maybe they could have been checked with as well ?

Andrew. The Shropshire Star has no defence. There was obviously no consultation with the Council or Theatre from yourselves. The story clearly stated that there could be problems for theatre-goers. Could? That particular statement was nothing more than mindless speculation.

Or are you telling us that your ‘spokesman’ also suggested there would be potential problems for theatre-goers?? This type of careless journalism ‘could’ have caused far more problems for theatre-goers.

    Poor, lazy journalism.

Its all the shropshire stars’ fault if it was more absorbant then it could be used to soak up all the excess water and the world would be a much happier place..

Lets be honest Andrew, if your article was correct and the information sourced properly it would not need the constant defence you keep providing for it, and instead would stand up to the scrutiny of the reader without the protection of its author.
