Roadside services bid resurrected

Multi-million pound plans to build roadside services in Newport, which would include a motel and restaurant, are back on the table.
Planning permission was granted two years ago for the development to be built on greenfield land close to the junction of the A41 and A518.
Developers claimed at the time it could create more than 50 jobs in the town. But a two-year time limit to start work has elapsed and a new planning application has had to be submitted.
It includes plans for an eight-pump petrol station with forecourt shop, 25 car parking spaces, a car wash and jet wash stations. A 41-bedroom motel and a large restaurant are in the plans, plus 80 car parking spaces for the motel, a picnic area, and a 40-space lorry park.
The application has been submitted by Cheltenham-based developers Hunter Page Planning on behalf of the owner of the land, Denis McKoy. It states: “The proposed scheme, which comprises a filling station, restaurant, motel and lorry park, will be of significant benefit to the area.
“The proposal provides an essential roadside facility that will not add to traffic and can be appropriately integrated into the surrounding landscape.”
The application will be looked at by members of Newport Town Council’s planning committee before a final decision is made by Telford & Wrekin Council.
Newport Town Council mayor Roy Scammell said he hoped the authority would have looked at the application by December 9.
“I can’t comment any further because I haven’t seen the plans – but I don’t think we put forward any objections the last time they were on the table,” he said.
It is expected to be debated by members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board in the new year.
