Tuesday 17th November 2009, 6:00PM GMT.
Police investigating an attempted raid at a Welshpool petrol station have appealed for more time to question two men, aged 18 and 24, who are believed to be from the Welshpool area.
The men were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of attempted robbery at the W R Davies garage in Welshpool.
The raiders were allegedly armed with baseball bats but fled the scene emptyhanded after they were challenged by members of staff at the premises in Salop Road on Friday night.
A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said today: “We are applying for extra time to question the two men who are currently in police custody in Welshpool.
“Both men were arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of attempted robbery.
“Baseball bats were used in the incident and a member of staff was threatened but no-one was injured.”
He said the force had reviewed relevant CCTV footage of the incident and appealed to anyone with information to get in touch with police.
“There were two offenders who fled the scene after being challenged by members of staff,” he said.
John Walker, manager at W R Davies of Welshpool, said the offenders had left the scene empty-handed
Ann Holloway, the mayor of Welshpool, said she was extremely saddened that something like this had happened in Welshpool.
She has appealed to police to find those responsible.
Anyone with information should call Dyfed-Powys Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
