School in sickness outbreak reopens

Monday 16th November 2009, 1:00PM GMT.

Tilstock CE Primary SchoolA Shropshire school that was forced to close because more than half of the pupils and staff were absent or displaying flu-like symptoms reopened today.

Tilstock CE Primary School, near Whitchurch, was closed temporarily by council bosses who said it was in the interests of the well-being of children and staff. Shropshire Council confirmed it reopened this morning.

Tim Smith, assistant director for children and young people’s services, made the announcement.

He said: “The headteacher has confirmed that sufficient staff have returned to work and pre-school and school activities will continue as usual.

“Parents and carers are reminded to remain vigilant and keep any ill children at home until they are fit and healthy to return to school.”

Mr Smith said the decision to close the school was taken to safeguard the health, welfare and safety of pupils and staff and to restrict the spread of further infection.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and liaise closely with the school and the Health Protection Agency,” he added.

Mr Smith said parents and carers who are concerned that their child is feeling unwell and suffering from flu-like symptoms are advised to contact the National Pandemic Flu service on 0800 1 513 100 or visit the online flu assessment website at www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk
