A cricketing legend was in Shropshire, lending a hand to one of the county’s cricket teams, writes Sue Austin.

Courtney Walsh, the West Indian fast bowler, agreed to be the guest of honour at Oswestry Cricket Club’s fundraising evening on Friday to help the club raise much-needed cash.

It was a chance for the cricketer to meet up with a former Gloucestershire team colleague, Ian Payne, who now turns out for the Oswestry second eleven – alongside both his son Max, and daughter, Naomi.

Courtney said: “Grass roots cricket is so important from bringing along good young players and so when Ian approached me to see if I would attend this event, I was happy to be of help.

“I still love the game and it is good to lend my support.

“I understand Oswestry has an excellent junior set-up, something that takes a great deal of organisation and dedication from club members.”

Ian said Courtney Walsh’s trip to Oswestry was helped by the generosity of the Lion Quays hotel.

He said the Oswestry club had one of the best junior coaching projects in Shropshire.

“We have 13-year-olds opening the batting in both the first and second eleven teams and our second eleven, which is comprised of many young players came third in the league this year. We put a lot of money into coaching, with several of our members recently completing their coaching certificates.”
