Drivers hit by delays as A41 work starts

Traffic chaos came to one of Shropshire’s busiest trunk routes today when major roadworks got under way despite fierce objections from motorists.
Planned resurfacing work on the county’s busy A41 was originally scrapped following protests from motorists facing the prospect of 30-mile diversion routes while the four-week project took place.
Telford & Wrekin Council bosses instead looked into the prospect of doing the work at night to minimise disruption.
But, following consultation with residents, it was decided the works should go ahead today as planned.
They are expected to take three weeks and will happen in phases, with different sections of the road closed at different times.
Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member Councillor Stephen Bentley said: “We may do some limited night-time working or weekend working to ensure that the work is completed as quickly as possible.”
Councillor Bentley said that information was sent out to residents and businesses in the wider local area and signs were put up ahead of the start of work today.
He said the council also wrote to as many road haulage firms as possible to advise them of the closure and the designated diversion.
Councillor Bentley said the maintenance work was a “major scheme” that only needed to be done once every 30 years.
He said: “We do not take any decision to close a road lightly and being aware of the public concern we have tried to do all we can to limit the disruption to residents and businesses.”
The roadworks were shelved earlier this year after angry motorists, residents and traders spoke out at a heated public meeting in Sambrook.
During the disruption, motorists will be faced with a choice of driving on minor roads or taking a 30-mile diversion route.
The work will mean the road will be closed between Chetwynd Firs, north of Newport, and just north of Stanford Bridge, near Sambrook.
The resurfacing work is being carried out after consultants told the borough council the road underlining and surface condition were poor.

Something needs to be sorted ASAP about all the traffic coming through Cheswardine, in the 1st day of the A41 being closed, i met 2 artic lorries on my way to work who did not know the road at all and i was nearly run off the road by a white van going way to fast for these roads.

I used to live in Cheswardine and now live in Newport, I admit i have been travelling through the back roads although I do know them well, as there is not a chance in hell im going to drive through eccleshall and back through loggerheads to get to work in market drayton. The back minor roads, i have seen more traffic on these past couple of days than ever!
I agree with Nic, they need to get it sorted, what i dont understand is, there is access for residents and businesses so they cannot be working totally across the road at any one time.
Traffic lights needed, so what if it backs up the traffic, people would prefer that than a 30 mile diversion!

business not good at the moment so thanks to whoever thought that closing the road was the correct way to go. last years “major” road works made no difference to me at all, BRING BACK THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS!

I live at Lane End Barns on the A41 and everyone I’ve spoken to has a problem with these works. I was so annoyed the other day [Tuesday]that I sent the email below to Stuart Freeman, the guy responsible for organising the works. So far I haven’t had a reply, nor have I from any of the Councillors that were on copy. May be if all those affected by this shambles got in touch with their respective Councillors they might actually take some notice. Here’s the email…………..
Dear Stuart,
I’m sure this isn’t the first e-mail you will have received re. the
above and I suspect it won’t be the last. Less than 36hrs into the
planned works and we already have serious problems.
Please let me explain. I tried to travel north on the A41 to Sambrook
on business and was turned back despite the yellow permit clearly being
displayed in my windscreen. The detour involved the back road to
Sambrook via Puleston. To my dismay, I was following a number of HGV’s
including a Muller Tanker, presumably on his way to Market Drayton. On
my return, I tried to come south on the A41 from the Sambrook
crossroads and was again refused access being told that the road was
closed and that I may as well tear the yellow permit up as “everything
has changed.”
When I eventually got home, I was informed by my wife that she had
been talking to Fay Price [Communication Liaison Officer, Jacobs
Engineering] who informed her that the permits had been revoked due to
‘some residents’ spitting at the Tarmac workforce. Surely only those
people doing the ‘alleged spitting’ need lose their right of access.
Their registration numbers should have been taken and reported to the
Police. That way only the culprits are punished instead of the rest of
us.
Fay also stated that drivers had been removing the barriers in order
to gain access. In view of the fact that residents travelling north
yesterday had to cross over to the southbound carriageway, I am not
suprised! There were no lights and no signs to show drivers what they
needed to do to negotiate the obsatcles. This is surely an accident
waiting to happen.
I also understand from a close neighbour that Tarmac have refused
access to a delivery van transporting a new toilet to her home. Is she
expected to have to wait for three weeks ‘to be able to relieve
herself”?
Another neighbour has, I understand, written to the Council stating
that the road closure at Chetwynd is ‘unlawful’.
Is this true? What powers does the Council have to close roads as they
see fit?
It seems to me that the Council has just been paying ‘lip service’ and
is using feeble excuses to go back to the original plans and stuff the
residents and businesses.

The whole process has been a mess. I would suggest that you contact your local councillors who stated at the public meeting that this would not happen
