Anxious Telford look to heavens

The pitch at the Bucks Head after the Vauxhall Motors game was called off.
Chairman Lee Carter is anxiously watching the weather as he sweats on whether AFC Telford United’s Shropshire Senior Cup final with Shrewsbury Town can go ahead.
The Bucks were forced to postpone their Blue Square North clash with Vauxhall Motors on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.
It was the first time Telford have been forced to call off a home league game since the formation of the new club back in 2004.
But more torrential downpours this morning left the New Bucks Head pitch saturated, and Carter admits another pitch inspection is likely ahead of tomorrow’s big clash.
“There has to be a massive concern over tomorrow night’s game,” he said. “The pitch had a little bit of time to dry out yesterday, but any more rain today and it will require a pitch inspection tomorrow.
“We’ve had a lot of rain lately and we were actually a little fortunate we got last week’s FA Cup game against Lincoln on.
“That had looked like it might be in doubt as well, but we got a lucky break with the weather and managed to get the pitch playable, even though it was a little soft.”
Telford’s was one of two games in the Blue Square North to fall victim to the weather on Saturday – the clash between Droylsden and Stalybridge also being postponed.
Results elsewhere did not affect the Bucks, who remain in 10th position, though they now have up to three games in hand on some teams.
Carter insisted they had been eager to get their game on, but had found the state of the pitch too bad.
“It was the worst it’s ever been when we’ve called a pitch inspection,” he added.
