Captain Stuart will bide his time
Saturday 14th November 2009, 11:08AM GMT.
Club captain Stuart Whitehead insists he has no qualms about being frozen out of AFC Telford United’s starting line-up.
Centre-back Whitehead has not featured since being substituted at half-time of the 2-0 defeat at home to Southport almost four weeks ago.
The new pairing of Gavin Cowan — who has assumed the matchday captaincy — and Shane Killock kept four consecutive clean sheets before last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Lincoln in the FA Cup.
And former Shrewsbury and Darlington defender Whitehead accepts he must bide his time before getting a chance to reclaim his place.
“I know I can’t have any qualms because the two lads in there have done well,” said Whitehead, who was hoping to play some part in today’s clash at home to Vauxhall Motors.
“I’ve found it frustrating because it’s five games I haven’t played now and it’s not something that’s happened to me in my career before.
“I wouldn’t like anybody to think I’m spitting my dummy out, because I’m not, but I just want to be playing week-in-week-out.
“When there are a number of you competing you know you are never going to be in a comfort zone, you have to keep playing well to keep your place.
“The pressure’s there that you have to step up to the plate, and that’s what I’ll be trying to do when I get the chance.”
