Raiders flee with cigarettes

Friday 13th November 2009, 11:29AM GMT.

Masked raiders smashed their way into a supermarket petrol station in Shrewsbury in the early hours of today before making off with cigarettes worth thousands of pounds.

The four men, who had their faces covered and were wearing dark clothing, broke into the Tesco petrol station store in Battlefield at about 12.15am.

Bosses at the store today said they were still working out the value of the stolen goods, but estimated a value of £4,000.

No staff were in the store, but police were called by an alarm being triggered.

Police said the offenders were in a blue car with large alloy wheels, possibly an Audi, which pulled up on the forecourt.

Detective Inspector Michael Homden today said: “The main Tesco store was open at the time so there would have been numerous people in the area who we believe may have seen this vehicle or any activity that might be connected.

“If anybody has seen a car matching the description or anything else which they believe might help our investigation, please could they contact police on 0300 333 3000.”
