Members of the Bridgnorth table tennis team: Billy Pegg, manager Terry Ridgway and Joe Hurdley
Shropshire will have an interest for the first time ever in the national finals of the English Table Tennis Association’s elite Willmott Cup.
Bridgnorth A, who are representing the Telford League, came through the zonal round to reach the finals at Derby on May 22 next year.
Telford-based pair Joe Hurdley and Billy Pegg – the county’s No 1 and 2 – were the Bridgnorth line-up to achieve the feat, seeing off the Potteries and Leamington Spa at Oldbury Wells School last weekend.
It is only the second year a Shropshire side has even entered the Willmott Cup and coach Terry Ridgway is delighted at their success.
“It’s one of those tournaments that we’ve never thought ourselves good enough to enter, but last year we decided to try and we gave it our best shot,” said Ridgway.
“Our two players are ranked 240 and 230 in the country, and they’ll be pitted against players in the top 10, 20 or 30 so it will be an experience for them in the finals.”
