Flu-like outbreak school still shut
Thursday 12th November 2009, 11:57AM GMT.
A Shropshire school which is closed because more than half of the pupils and staff are absent or displaying flu-like symptoms is likely to remain shut this week.
Shropshire Council says more than half of the teaching and support staff at Tilstock CE Primary School, near Whitchurch, are off sick or have flu-like symptoms with a similar proportion of pupils affected.
The school closed on Tuesday.
Tim Smith, assistant director for children and young people’s services at the council, said a decision on reopening would be taken when a sufficient number of staff was available to work.
Meanwhile, a £7.5 million research study is to be launched into swine flu.
Some of Britain’s top scientists will head a series of studies looking at how the pandemic H1N1 strain develops and spreads.
Last week, an estimated 84,000 new cases of the virus were reported.
