A book in memory of every Newport man who died in the First and Second World Wars has been presented to its town council.

The gesture was delivered last night at Newport Town Council’s monthly meeting.

Presenting the memorial was former councillor David Adams, who has devoted years to the project.

He said: “In 2001, I visited the battlefields in France and attended an Armistice service there. I noticed lots of young children from different groups and I wondered what it meant to them.

“I thought it would be easier for them to put in context with the names of soldiers, their regiments and the places they lived. And I decided to start compiling the memorial for Newport.”

The book includes the names and regiments of all the Newport men who died in the Great War from 1914 to 1918 and Second World War from 1939 to 1945.

It also documents men who survived as members of the King’s Shropshire light infantry, but have since died.

Mr Adams has printed five copies of the book. One remains with him, and as well as presenting one to the council he has given copies to the town’s church, Royal Naval Association and Royal British Legion.
