A founder member of Oswestry Rugby Club has died following a long illness.
Mr Dai Jones, who helped re-form the club more than 30 years ago, died on Thursday at the West Vale Nursing Home, Warrington.
Mr Jones was 58 and had battled illness for some time.
Tributes have today been paid to Mr Jones, who has been described as an excellent player and an inspiration to many young rugby players.
He helped reform the popular club but later moved from Oswestry to Warrington.
He first arrived in Oswestry as a soldier, based at Park Hall Army camp and was to return to the camp when the club made it its home in the late 1970s.
A former president of Oswestry Rugby Club, Mr John Davies, today paid tribute to Mr Jones, who he said helped reform the club in 1974/75.
“He was a very, very good player, playing outside half. He was also a real character and a very popular guy,” he said.
“He would lead by example and enjoyed helping and inspiring youngsters.”
A minute’s silence was held in Mr Jones’s memory at Oswestry Rugby Club’s game on Saturday.
Mr Jones moved away from Oswestry in 1994.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 1pm at Walton Lea Crematorium, Warrington.
