Drummond in last chance to stay with elite

Shropshire’s Scott Drummond enters the last chance saloon in his quest to remain amongst the golfing elite tomorrow.

The 35-year-old, who was born in Shrewsbury, must secure a top five finish in the Hong Kong Open – his final event of the season – to have a chance of retaining his place on the European Tour.

Only the top 115 on the order of merit- plus four affiliate members for players ranked 116 to 119 – retain their place on the Tour.

Drummond is currently 136th and some 40,000 euros behind the cut-off mark.

He has become vulnerable as his five-year exemption for winning the 2004 PGA Championship at Wentworth has now expired.

And Drummond will have to overcome a strong field to secure the top five finish he requires.

Amongst the starts on show in Hong Kong are trusted Ryder Cup performers Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell and rising ace Rory McIlroy.

“I’ve played really well in the last six or eight tournaments so I was hoping it would all be sorted by now,” said Drummond.

“I will give it everything so if it doesn’t happen, I know I couldn’t have done any more.

“I know I have to be aggressive from the start.

“With the quality of the field here, the scoring is going to be good and a top 10 finish isn’t much good to me on this occasion.”

A slow start to the season has left Drummond in this precarious position, although he has enjoyed three top 35 finishes – and a best of 12th – in his last six tournaments.

Should Drummond fail to reach his targets this week, he would have to return to Tour School at the end of the month in Spain, where just 30 places will be up for grabs.

“If it came to do that, I wouldn’t just be going there to get my card – I would be going there to try and win it,” he added.
