Robb riled at ABA decision

Tuesday 10th November 2009, 4:00PM GMT.

Brian RobbFurious Brian Robb, one of Shropshire’s leading boxing coaches, believes Dan Cartwright has been “cheated” out of the chance to become national champion.

Shrewsbury ABC’s Cartwright, who lives in Telford, was beaten by Yorkshire’s Arron Calvert in the semi-final of the under 63kgs category in the Junior Novice ABAs at Bolton.

Cartwright went down 8-2 on points in the three-round bout, having trailed 2-0 and 6-0 at the end of the first two sessions.

But an angry Robb was outraged at the decision and has filed a complaint to ABA officials.

“This was not robbery – it was cheating,” said the club’s head coach Robb.

“I have been trying to talk my brother Dave – who had 270 amateur and professional contests – into coming back to coach at Shrewsbury with me.

“He agreed recently but said after the contest that boxing is corrupt and is not sure now if he wants to be involved with people like that.

“It was a terrible decision. Hopefully we will get a re-match with Calvert and put it straight but that won’t get Dan the title.”

Midlands ABA secretary Dave Cockell said: “The bout was decided on points by five major bout judges.”
