National call-up for Bucks’ Newton

Tuesday 10th November 2009, 2:00PM GMT.

Sean NewtonLeft-back Sean Newton has become the latest AFC Telford United player to win international recognition – with a call-up to the England ‘C’ squad.

Newton, who also represented England last season while on the books of Droylsden, has been brought in off the standby list for next Tuesday’s clash away to Poland under-23s.

But the game clashes with Telford’s Shropshire Senior Cup final against Shrewsbury Town, and club officials will today talk with Newton and the FA before deciding if he will be released.

Right-back Lee Vaughan, who played in last month’s game in Hungary, remains on the standby list for now, while there is no place for striker Andy Brown, who was named in a contingency squad last season.

“We’ve had three of our squad who have been involved in some capacity now,” said chairman Lee Carter.

“It’s a great honour for them and it’s fantastic for the club. It reinforces our intention to focus on young players of quality, and that’s the way we want to go in the future.”

If released, Newton will meet up with his team-mates on Sunday before jetting off to the eastern European country for the clash in Grodzisk Wielkopolski.

Carter, manager Rob Smith and assistant Larry Chambers will talk to the 20-year-old this evening before taking a final decision.

The Bucks chairman added: “We’re a bit short of numbers ourselves right now and we have a game next Tuesday, but if we can find a way I’m sure we’d be happy to release him.

“We just have to see where we are because we have an important game with Shrewsbury Town.

“There is a lot of snobbery about the Senior Cup with people saying it’s not important, but I’m a Shropshire man and I love Shropshire football – and this is the showpiece match.

“It also raises money for the Shropshire FA which can be spent on the development of football in the county, so it’s important and it means a lot to us.”
