Telford FM’s Hero Awards celebrate unsung achievements — the people who work behind the scenes making a real difference to the lives of others.
The radio station’s listeners have been nominating those volunteers and friendly characters who go the extra mile for the people around them, for no other reason than they care.
Over the weeks listeners have been nominating candidates for the Courage award, Dad of the Year award, Mum of the Year award, Volunteer of the Year award and Neighbour of the Year.
Judges have made their decisions, and Telford FM’s Paul Shuttleworth has been making a surprise visit to the winners to present them with their certificate, trophy and a bouquet of flowers.
Today: Meet the winner of the Dad of the Year award.
The judges were looking for a dad who has either endured a difficult time and faced issues in parenting, or a parent who has taken on responsibilities towards other children, such as fostering or respite care for other families.
The winner was Martyn Edwards, of Newport, who was nominated by his children Holly and Jack.
They thought their father should be Dad of the Year because of the way he looked after them while their sister Lucy was at Hope House.
Although Lucy died, Martyn was always there for Lucy and Jack, and they wanted to thank him for his hugs and support.
