Call to safeguard war memorials

A councillor today called for action to ensure all war memorials across Telford & Wrekin are safeguarded for future generations.
Councillor Shaun Davies has asked Telford & Wrekin Council to draw up a report on the costs involved in ensuring all the monuments are properly repaired and maintained.
Councillor Davies, chairman of the policy committee on Great Dawley Parish Council, has also thrown his weight behind a national campaign to log and preserve such monuments.
He said: “In Dawley and across Telford & Wrekin we have a proud British Legion presence.
“I feel that it is fitting that Telford & Wrekin Council, in partnership with the British Legion, regeneration partnerships and town and parish councils, should actively look after our memorials across our town.
“At this time of year we remember not only those who have fallen in both wars but also those who have fallen or have been injured in recent conflicts.
“I call on Telford & Wrekin Council to take a lead in this area. We must not forget those who have giving the ultimate sacrifice for this country.”
The War Memorial Trust is campaigning to record the location and state of every memorial in the UK and to come up with ways in which they can be maintained and repaired.

What a damning indictment that such a call has to be made in the first place. Repair and maintenance should be carried out without the need for reminders.
Elected council officials responsible for ageing and neglected war memorials would do well to remember that in most cases, without these fallen heroes, there may not have been the possibility or political system in place to allow elections to be held in the first place.
