Threat with hammer in robbery bid
Monday 9th November 2009, 11:40AM GMT.
A man was threatened with a claw hammer during an attempted robbery of a security van outside a Shropshire supermarket.
Two men fled empty-handed in a red Ford Mondeo after the incident at 2.30pm yesterday at Morrisons, in Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury.
The quick-thinking van driver had carried out security procedures to protect the money.
West Mercia Police has launched an investigation and today issued an appeal for witnesses.
Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the Mondeo before, during, or after the incident in the area.
A Morrisons spokeswoman said the supermarket was liaising with police.
She said: “We can confirm that there was an incident involving a Securicor van outside our Shrewsbury store. We are liaising with the police on this matter.”
A similar incident happened outside the supermarket in June 2006, when two men fled with a substantial amount of cash after robbing a Securicor guard.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I had been in the area of the supermarket during Sunday and it looked as if something was going on. Luckily I don’t think anybody was hurt.”
Anyone with information should call police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
