A record number of people took part in services held in memory of Shropshire servicemen and women who lost their lives fighting in conflicts for their country.

A civic procession left Shrewsbury Castle at 9.15am yesterday following a route to St Chad’s Church for a packed service which was led by the retired former Bishop of Southwark, Ronnie Bowlby.

The Reverend Mark Thomas, vicar at St Chad’s, said about 1,500 people were in attendance. He said: “It was a wonderful service and there was a record number of people attended. There were people standing outside the vestibule because there was nowhere to sit down.”
