New moves to save West Mid
Monday 9th November 2009, 11:59AM GMT.
Moves were today under way to save the West Mid Show.
Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski is seeking “urgent” talks with the show’s organisers and is attempting to secure an investor to bail them out and keep the show going.
Mr Kawczynski said he had already made “tentative” inquiries with investors in London and Shropshire and was planning to set up a meeting with the show committee this week when he returns from Parliament.
He said: “I’m going to be getting in touch with the chairman Gary Tudor and the show committee to see how much money they need in order to keep the West Mid Show going.
“I want to see if we can work together to seek credible investors for it.
“I need more details from the committee to see whether we can convince potential investors to put money into the show to keep it going.”
The Shropshire Star revealed last week how trustees had on Wednesday voted to bring in an insolvency specialist after being advised that the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society, the registered charity behind the show, could no longer continue trading.
It owes up to £160,000 to about 50 creditors.
The announcement sparked sadness and concern across the county, with many people saying they hoped a positive solution could be found soon.
David Collier, regional director for the National Farmers’ Union in the West Midlands, spoke of his sadness that the decision had needed to be taken.
He said: “This will come as very sad news for many farmers and others who have supported the society and its activities, including the main summer show.
“The society has been part of the agricultural fabric of Shropshire for more than 120 years and in that time it has showcased the best that farming has to offer.
“The county is renowned for its livestock and the show provided a platform on which to display the very best animals, many of which went on to win national competitions.
“The NFU is also conscious that the society had a significant number of creditors and some are likely to be badly hit by the society’s collapse. Our thoughts are with them at what is already a difficult time for the local economy.”

Within a few years, it will all be housing development. But they’ll remember the historic West Mid Show with names like:
Drover’s Court, Shepherd’s Close, Farmer’s Lane, Wheatsheaf Road, Set Aside Way and EU Agricultural Policy Boulevard.

Matt fortunately it’s flood plain or else it would be concrete by now. At the risk of repeating my idea why not move the Quarry concerts there? Face the stage away from the town. They have a public safety licence already in place for 20,000 people! C’mon Shrewsbury…let’s rock!!

I think the West Mid show should be saved, it has to be saved it been in the town for 150yrs which is such a long time and it should not end now it should carry on for another 150yrs and so our grandchildren and great grandchildren will enjoy what we all enjoyed and the show needs this bail out now

As said its safe from developers as its under water 2 months of every year
its needed to be ‘space for water’ but in the dry season it would be a lovely town park / outdoor recreation area

The birdlife here is great and the flooding cycle is natural and helpful for nature here. It does need grazing though, so perhaps it could be a giant city farm instead, get the school kids down there to learn about growing and farming

I think their main reason for failing is that the show is rubbish! It is expensive to get in and you can spend all of an hour or so there, it has gone from a great agricultural show with plenty do watch and do to a car boot sale type show with people just selling tat. Maybe they should look at the country and game fair at weston park and take a leaf out of their book. Bring it back to the country and agricultural show it once.
