Police warning over spate of burglaries

Saturday 7th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

Six homes in Broseley have been burgled in the past month, police revealed today.

Officers are concerned at the sudden increase in the the area and have appealed to residents to “take all possible precautions to protect their property”. Detective Constable Jason Whelan, who is investigating the spate of break-ins, admitted it was a cause for concern.

“The Broseley area is a relatively low crime district and the increase in burglaries in recent weeks is unusual,” he said.

“It is also important people remain vigilant and remove all keys from windows and doors and to make sure all doors are kept locked when not in use.

“Ground floor windows should always be closed at night.”

DC Whelan said all recent burglaries followed a similar pattern, mostly carried out during the daytime by forcing windows or patio doors at the back of properties. Jewellery and cash were the main targets.

The most recent incident happened at a home in Dark Lane between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning when conservatory doors were forced and a patio window smashed.

Jewellery was stolen, including a nine carat gold mounted brooch with a red stone in the centre and a nine carat gold brooch with a central aquamarine stone.

Police want to make sure other residents are not victims of crime and advice includes making sure all windows and doors are locked and secured, either when people are out or at night.

Homeowners are also urged to make sure lights are left on where possible when people are out.

Anyone with information or who spots suspicious activity in their neighbourhood is urged to contact Bridgnorth police on 0300 333 3000.

Information concerning suspects can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111, for which a reward may be paid.
