County car parking fees bring in £4.2m

Saturday 7th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

The report, which has been presented to the Shropshire Council development services scrutiny committee, claims that the supply of car parking is adequate, but there is a perceived shortage of on-street parking in the centres of the bigger towns.

Data relating to car park use in Shrewsbury showed there was adequate provision, as even at peak periods on a Saturday, there were more than 200 spaces available.

The report says that car park use in Shrewsbury peaked in 2005/06 and use of the Park and Ride service has steadily increased.

Currently there are a number of different parking charges in place across Shropshire. These vary from a £7.50 all-day fee in Shrewsbury to a 70p all-day charge at Oak Street, Oswestry. All charges will be examined.

“This will include reviewing whether to introduce charges where none are currently made.”

Three charging bands are being proposed.

Band A will be high charge, covering short-stay, on-street centrally located spaces.

Band B will be a medium charge, for short and medium-stay in centrally located off-street car parks and peripheral on-street spaces.

Band C will be a low charge, covering long-stay in peripheral off-street car parks.
