Cup shock in our grasp says Bucks boss
Friday 6th November 2009, 1:00PM GMT.
Rob Smith today urged his buoyant AFC Telford United squad to grasp their chance of causing an FA Cup stunner tomorrow by declaring: “It would be our best moment yet.”
The Bucks host League Two outfit Lincoln attempting to bridge the two divisions and 39 places which separate the two teams.
And manager Smith has come out fighting, insisting a shock is within the grasp of his side.
“We are not just going to play our part in an FA Cup tie tomorrow – we are going there to win it, make no mistake about that,” said Smith.
“We know it’s going to be difficult. Lincoln have had their struggles but you have to remember that those struggles have been in two divisions higher.
“Lincoln have looked strong defensively since Chris Sutton took over as manager so the issue will be trying to break them down.
“But we have had four clean sheets in a row and six in the last seven, and won our last three games so this has probably come at the right time for us.”
Telford officials are hoping for an attendance pushing 3,000 for the clash.
And Smith is hoping the crowd play their part, just as they did 12 months ago when Telford came within a whisker of defeating Southend, only to concede a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw before losing the replay.
“We haven’t given the crowd too much to shout about at home this season but occasions like this seem to bring the town together,” he added. “I still remember the noise when Jon Adams scored against Southend last season and it was like the ground was shaking. We need the same tomorrow to make it intimidating.”
Telford will be without midfield duo Chris Nurse and Gavin Hurren, injured and suspended respectively, but Carl Rodgers is on course to return. Top scorer Andy Brown remains doubtful with a groin injury.
