Council jobs axed in overhaul

Friday 6th November 2009, 11:58AM GMT.

Powys’ biggest employer is to shed up to 11 jobs in a bid to reduce costs and improve services, it has been revealed.

Powys County Council said today it would be looking to axe the jobs in the economic and community regeneration department.

The council will now undertake a formal two-month consultation process.

It said it had been left with no other option but to change the way the service is run in order to meet the challenges of the current economic climate.

The service, which currently employs 60 staff, will see a radical overhaul and will mean up to 11 posts being lost.

Councillor Wynne Jones, the county council’s board member responsible for regeneration, said the changes would improve efficiency and the ability to react to rapidly changing economic circumstances, as well as reduce the overall running costs.

He said: “Regeneration services and the way they are managed have changed dramatically in recent years and we must adapt to meet the latest challenges.

“We must have a service that is flexible and capable of responding quickly and professionally to different emerging priorities as set by national government and European directives.

“We are confident that the changes we propose will leave us well placed to meet those challenges.”

He said: “It is regrettable that 11 posts will be lost as part of the proposals.”

    Dear, dear, dear.

11 jobs from the work force of the largest employer in the county. That will make a dent. And a full 2 months to talk about whether it will actually happen anyway before any action is taken.

And of course, during a recession, when we badly need economic regeneration, Powys decides that that it is the department concentrating on just that from where the loss will come from, no doubt believing that a cut there will negatively affect the little hope of economic generation that already exists, and thus lead the way to a cry to government to bail them out.

Get a grip, Powys. 11 jobs will not be enough. And to take them from a department tasked with regenerating the economy – total madness.

Here’s another idea of some suitable targets for you, instead>

The scores of Diversity Officers, Play Rangers, Community Integration Officers, Street-light turner-offers, Icelandic Bank Investment Officers, Reward Advisers (annual salary of £30,000 to £33,000), Recruitment Managers (£36,000 to £39,000), Principal HR Advisers (£36,000 to £39,000), a ‘Learning Pathways Manager’ (£47,000 to £50,000), an ICT adviser (£22,845) and six Senior Social Workers (£26,067 to £33,291), Digital History Project Leaders, Executive Directors (£120,000+) PLUS their pensions, PLUS their relocation packages, PLUS their generous redundancy terms.

Let us also note that in Powys, a rural area of Great Britain with below average salaries and wages, more than 1300 staff are paid more than £30 grand pa, with top salaries exceeding £100K – that is a considerable income in Powys.

Now Powys CC … tell me that you cannot save more with less effect on the future outlook for the local economy.

Read somewhere that Powys C C has 500 staff in excess of its requirements but that it will take years for them to slim down the workforce. You cannot take the Council seriously when it is stated that there will be a shortfall of 33 milion pounds over the next five year swhen seemingly they do nothing about reducing the costs.Perhaps they should contact Doncaster council for ideas . No doubt the ratepayers are in for a torrid time.

Well if Powys county council took an axe to its workforce numbers and it only chipped 11 off they must go on a axe wielding course.
Those that decided to build obstuctions in Watergate street in Llanfair Caereinion so you now have to drive on the right hand side of the road approaching a right hand blind bend and then installed four “speed humps”, upside down potholes I call them, are certainly surplus to requirements.
I volunteer as unpaid axe wielder for the council to achieve better results.
