Revealed: Jobs risk at MoD depot
Thursday 5th November 2009, 10:03AM GMT.
Jobs at the Ministry of Defence in Donnington were at risk today after it was revealed that bosses are looking to cut the number of employees at the storage depot.
An internal letter between two employees of the MoD leaked to the Shropshire Star confirmed it was looking to reduce its workforce.
The letter said: “As I am sure you will appreciate, there is always pressure to reduce the costs associated with the public sector and I can confirm that we are working to reduce the numbers employed on the Donnington base and seeking to reduce overtime where it is appropriate to do so, in accordance with Defence priorities.”
A spokeswoman for the MoD said today no firm decisions had been made.
She said: “The MoD is working with the Treasury to look at ways we can improve efficiency across defence. We are considering a number of options how we achieve this and trade unions are fully engaged in the process. No decision has yet been made.”
Overtime has already been slashed at the depot but the exact number of jobs losses has not been decided.
No one from the Transport and General Workers’ Union, which represents the Donnington staff, was available for comment.
Councillor Phil Norton, chairman of Lilleshall and Donnington Parish Council, called for the Government to be mindful of the impact any job losses would have.
