Poppy box theft from town store
Thursday 5th November 2009, 12:12PM GMT.
Thieves have stolen a poppy collection box from a Shrewsbury store, police said today.
The Royal British Legion box was taken from outside the customer service area of Rackhams in the town’s High Street between 9am and 2.30pm on Tuesday.
It was held in place by an alarmed cable but police say no-one heard the alarm go off. The box had been in the shop for about a fortnight.
Today a spokesman for House of Fraser, which runs the store which is still known as Rackhams, said: “House of Fraser, Shrewsbury, fully supports the Poppy Appeal and we have sold poppies on behalf of the local Royal British Legion for a number of years and will continue to do so.
“It is very disappointing that this incident has taken place and we will do what we can to help the relevant parties recover the money.”
Police today urged people to come forward.
Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “We would welcome any information which might help us identify the thief. Contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 3333000.”
