Police hunting chocolate thief

Thursday 5th November 2009, 8:51AM GMT.

ChocolateThis is the man police want to speak to in connection with the theft of 133 chocolate bars from a Shropshire supermarket.

The thief walked out of Tesco Express in Haygate Road, Wellington, with nearly £200 of chocolate without paying and was caught on CCTV leaving the shop.

The haul he escaped with included bars of Dairy Milk and Galaxy. The theft happened just after 5.30pm last Thursday.

Police are investigating the matter and have issued a CCTV still of a man they want to speak to.

He is thought to be in his late 20s or early 30s with dark hair and was wearing dark jeans and a jacket on the day in question.

Telford police spokeswoman Denise Wakefield said: “A large amount of chocolate was stolen from the supermarket. This man’s image was captured on the CCTV around the time of the incident and we are hoping somebody will be able to identify him. If you know who he is, please come forward and speak to us.”

Anyone with information about the man pictured in the CCTV, or the theft itself, can contact Constable Steve Wootton on 0300 333 3000.

Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 11.

Last year a shopper was pushed to the floor and kicked after a row broke out at the supermarket. The 44-year-old victim was queueing at the checkout when another man lashed out. The fight ended when the shaven headed attacker left.

The £350,000 convenience store opened to much fanfare in 2005 as an essential service to the town.

Mayor Pat Fairclough cut the ribbon and children were handed balloons.
