Heavy rainfall causes road flood concerns
Thursday 5th November 2009, 9:59AM GMT.
Shropshire has already had half its average rainfall for this month after a heavy downpour caused surface water flooding on roads across the county.
Up to 12 millimetres of rain fell across the region overnight.
The downpour forced motorists on some roads to take extra care this morning.
Weather experts said the county has had about 35mm of rainfall this month after just five days of November. The average rainfall for the month is about 65mm to 70mm.
In Shrewsbury motorists had to be careful because of surface water flooding in Belle Vue Road, while in rural areas drivers using minor roads in places like Hodnet and Baschurch had to carefully negotiate their way through large pools of water.
In Telford & Wrekin there was also surface water flooding but no significant problems and council and emergency officials across both areas said there had not been any major problems.
John Warner, the Shropshire Star’s weatherman, said: “The rain has kept pouring over the Irish Sea and comes down through the Cheshire Gap so we get more than our fair share.
“The average daily fall in Shropshire for November is just under two millimetres but we had 10mm to 12mm overnight.
“November has been quite wet so far and we’ve had about 35mm so far. The average for the month is usually 65mm to 70mm.”
He said more rain was expected today and tomorrow with blustery showers on Saturday.
