Queries over £1.7m tennis centre project

Plans for a £1.7 million tennis centre are expected to be pulled from a Telford site because of what experts describe as “planning and technical issues”, it has emerged.
The Telford Tennis Centre was expected to go ahead at Hadley Learning Community but today Telford & Wrekin Council said it was unlikely the site would be used because of “planning and technical issues”.
Other options are now being looked at, with Oakengates Leisure Centre suggested as a possible location.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “For a number of reasons that include planning and technical issues that are unique to the HLC site, we think it is unlikely that this would represent the best value for a Telford Tennis Centre on this site.
“The council, working with partners including the Lawn Tennis Association, is looking at options for potential sites where we could base this £1.7 million tennis centre, which we want to be up and running by the end of 2010.
“This will create a fabulous new state-of-the-art tennis facility for people in the borough, part of the Borough Towns Initiative Sports & Learning Communities, which can be used by the whole community.”
Pat Smart, chairman of Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council, which discussed the issue last night said: “I am seriously disappointed, it is very disappointing news. It was going to be a substantial amount. We need an explanation.”

This council seems to slide from one calamity to another when it comes to planning and regeneration. How can they not already know of planning constraints on their own site?
