Refurbishment of a Shropshire town council building expected to cost about £100,000 has been delayed after chunks of plaster fell from the ceiling in one of the building’s offices.

Ludlow Mayor Martin Taylor-Smith said investigations following the damage, which happened last month, had revealed the main council chamber in Ludlow’s Buttercross also had problems.

Ludlow Town Council is expected to move its operations out of the building and will discuss options at its next meeting on Monday.

Councillor Taylor-Smith said: “We obviously have a problem and safety comes first. We can’t have members of our staff or the public put at risk.”

The initial plan was to put a new roof on the building and enhance the exterior. The ceiling collapse was not related to the start of the work.

Mr Taylor-Smith said: “We think the initial fall was when the clock winder went up, just from the vibration.”

He said having work done on the roof would cause more plaster to fall and the project was temporarily delayed.

He added that the unfortunate development could have implications for the council’s financial circumstances, as grant money from English Heritage was only covering part of the cost of the planned refurbishment.

The council has been offered the use of The Stables at Shropshire Council offices in Corve Street, Ludlow.

It also has the option of moving into Ludlow Magistrates’ Court.
