Veteran war reporter’s county date

Tuesday 3rd November 2009, 12:59PM GMT.

Martin BellFormer war correspondent and MP Martin Bell is due to visit Shropshire this week to give a talk on his life’s experiences.

The ex-BBC journalist will be at the Albright Hussey Hotel, near Shrewsbury, to recount some of his experiences in war zones ranging from Vietnam, where he made his name in the 1960s, to Sarajevo, where he was badly wounded by shrapnel while delivering a report to camera during the conflict in the mid-1990s.

The event, entitled “Martin Bell on war, peace and sleaze” is due to take place on Friday from 7.30pm.

It will feature a dinner and has been organised by the Shrewsbury Rotary Club to raise funds for the Hope and Homes for Children charity of which Mr Bell is a patron.

Mike Law, from Shrewsbury Rotary Club, said: “Martin Bell will be speaking after dinner, reflecting on his wide experience, his many adventures in war zones, in journalism and in parliament, no doubt giving his audience an insight into worlds of which he is familiar and which most of us have some strong views and even misconceptions.

“This evening should provide an opportunity to relax among friends, pick up some new angles on aspects of life which frequently arouse passions, with a chance to hear from someone who has been there.”

There are a few tickets still available for the evening which are available by calling Rotarian Phil Henshaw on 07973 418440.

The dress code for the evening is lounge suits.
