County’s education chief will retire
Tuesday 3rd November 2009, 10:57AM GMT.
Shropshire schools’ boss Liz Nicholson is to retire in April, it was announced today.
Mrs Nicholson joined Shropshire County Council in 2000 as director of education.
In 2004 she became director of children and young people’s services and now holds the post with the unitary authority.
“I love the job and I love the challenge, but there comes a time for me personally and for the organisation as a whole when a fresh pair of eyes and approach is needed,” said Mrs Nicholson today.
“I hope I have made a difference, but there is always more to do and new challenges to face.”
She added: “I am looking forward to spending time with my husband, who hasn’t seen much of me over the past 10 years, and walking our two dogs.
“I will also be looking to see if there is any way I can use my experience to support others in children and young people’s services in the future.”
During Mrs Nicholson’s time as director, Shropshire has continued to strengthen its reputation as one of the best performing education authorities in England.
Attainment in Key Stage tests for 11 year olds and in GCSE and A-level examinations are consistently above national averages.
A report to the Shropshire Council cabinet tomorrow asks for approval to begin a recruitment campaign to find a successor to Mrs Nicholson.
The council education post carries a salary of between £125,000 and £145,000.
