County to remember the fallen

Tuesday 3rd November 2009, 11:00AM GMT.

PoppyShropshire will come to a standstill on Sunday in memory of servicemen and women who lost their lives fighting in various conflicts for their country.

Thousands of people are expected to take part in a two-minute silence across the county at 11am as part of Remembrance Day, which marks the 91st anniversary of the end of the hostilities in World War One.

The guns fell silent on November 11 at 11am in 1918.

A string of events is due to take place with people of all ages expected to attend commemorative services.

This year’s celebrations will have added poignancy for Shropshire people following the death earlier this year of former county man Harry Patch — the last remaining survivor of trench warfare from World War One.

Dave Lewis, a former member of the Welsh Guards who served in the Falklands, will perform his role as parade marshall for the Remembrance parade in Market Drayton.

He said: “It’s a chance to honour our fallen troops not just for World War One and World War Two but right up to the present day. It’s our chance to say ‘we will never forget you’.”

The town’s parade will muster at the post office car park at 10am before marching to St Mary’s Church for a service at 11am and wreath-laying at the town cenotaph at about noon, he added.

Members of the Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill, are expected to join in the parade.

Squadron Leader Neil Hope, RAF Shawbury airbase spokesman, said: “Staff from RAF Shawbury will be taking a major role in the Remembrance Day commemorations across Shropshire.

“The unit is providing personnel for the Shrewsbury service in St Chad’s Church and the associated parade through the town. The RAF Shawbury wreath will laid by the Station Commander, Group Captain Bunny James.”

Personnel from the airbase will also attend services at Hadley and Leegomery, Market Drayton, Moreton Say, Stoke-on-Tern, Ellesmere, Oswestry, Nesscliffe, Whitchurch and Wem.

People in Whitchurch can pay their respects when St John’s Methodist Church hosts a morning service and Remembrance service this Sunday from10.30am.

In the evening from 6.30pm there will be a remembering service for all lost loved ones.
