Burner decision due early next year

Tuesday 3rd November 2009, 6:00PM GMT.

Battlefield topThe fate of controversial plans for a £60 million incinerator proposed for the outskirts of Shrewsbury could be decided in a matter of months.

Earlier this year Veolia submitted plans for an energy-from-waste incinerator at Battlefield, which has sparked strong objections from some residents and campaign groups.

Veolia claims it could generate enough power to supply 10,000 homes and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill to just five per cent.

Councillor Alan Mosley, a Shropshire Councillor, has asked Martin Taylor-Smith, the portfolio holder for strategic planning and transport at the unitary council, what the latest situation is with the planning application.

In a written reply, ahead of a meeting of the council on Thursday, Councillor Taylor-Smith said it could be heard as early as February.

He said the applicant, Veolia, and their consultants have been requested to provide additional information on such matters as the control of air emissions, waste throughput and recycling, energy use, traffic and transport and the effects on the natural environment and cultural heritage.

The supplementary information will trigger a further round of publicity and consultation with statutory and other interested bodies.

“The earliest date for the determination of the application by the strategic regulatory committee is therefore likely to be February 4, 2010,” he said.

this must never be allowed to happen, it would be cheaper and greener to just recycle more instead and there are cheaper alternatives to this like plasma gasification or MBT which have not been fully explored

they should be aware that areas with incinerators tend to have much lower levels of recycling because the hungry toxic chimneys drag in waste from all around and will ruin any hope of waste reduction and recycling

This should be allowed to happen perhaps it will encourage Shrewsbury people to recycle if they have a reminder of what will happen otherwise plus perhaps the people of Telford may use it to burn all the rubbish they produce.

    Win Win on both sides.

    Let it happen

    or make it so
