Plans have been submitted for a £22 million transformation of Abraham Darby in Telford to include a built-in leisure centre, swimming pool and a new fitness suite as part of a major schools overhaul.
Developers Kier have submitted plans to create the Abraham Darby Sports and Learning Community – taking in the current site in Hill Top, Madeley, and also nearby Woodlands Primary School.
It is the first phase of an ambitious £200 million scheme for schools in Telford.
The plans will be subject to a three-month public consultation period before they go before Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans board to be decided upon.
If planning permission is granted, construction will start at the Abraham Darby in March 2011.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “This move marks the beginning of a project to see our schools becoming state- of-the-art sports and learning communities.
“This forms a cornerstone of Telford & Wrekin Council’s borough towns initiative.
“This council’s ambitious vision is now moving forward and I hope the public will make their views on the plans known as we welcome what residents have to say on the project.”
The next schools to be rebuilt will be the Lord Silkin in Stirchley and Phoenix School in Dawley.
