County on flood alert
Monday 2nd November 2009, 3:20PM GMT.
Shropshire was on flood watch today after torrential rain and strong winds wreaked havoc across the UK. Scotland has been worst hit, with several severe flood warnings in force.
Fire crews in parts of Wales have also had to pluck people from houses and cars, with the deluges also cancelling a number of train services.
The weather brought a washout end to a week of balmy conditions.
The Environment Agency today said flood watches were in place along the River Severn in Shropshire, the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence and the Lower Dee Valley.
Heavy rain caused two lanes of the Hollinswood interchange in Telford to be flooded. Police were called to attend at about 10.15am yesterday.
Cars driving through the flood were creating a wave and causing water to overspill on to the lanes of the A442.
Police also had reports of a tree falling in Regent Street in Wellington at about 12.30pm yesterday and Telford & Wrekin Council were called to the scene.
Part of a tree came down in high winds yesterday, blocking the A495 Ellesmere to Oswestry road.
And in Shrewsbury firefighters were called to a property in Clayton Way, at about 11.30am yesterday, following reports that a steel pre-fabricated garage had collapsed.
Train company Wrexham & Shropshire said flooding in north Wales caused disruption yesterday.
A spokesman said some trains were forced to stop in Shrewsbury rather than continuing to Wrexham.
