Stick to game plan, Town urged

SHREWSnewLogoTMManager Paul Simpson has urged Shrewsbury Town to play the game and not the names of mega bucks Notts County tomorrow.

Simpson’s side travel to Meadow Lane for a battle between two teams currently occupying play-off places in League Two.

County have yet to be beaten at home this season, scoring 21 goals in seven games on their own territory.

And, backed by a huge influx of cash from owners Munto Finance since the summer, they have assembled a squad sprinkled with players with Premiership experience.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has played in the top flight with Manchester City while strike pair Ade Akinbiyi and Lee Hughes have also graced the Premiership.

County’s other attacking options include Karl Hawley – who played under Simpson at both Carlisle and Preston – and two former Town players, Luke Rodgers and Ben Davies, who has been playing wide right for the Magpies in recent weeks.

But Simpson remains confident his side can return from the East Midlands with a result to build on last week’s 3-1 victory over Aldershot.

“We know they are a very wealthy football club for League Two level who have brought in some good players,” said Simpson.

“But we can’t worry about that and we have to make sure we approach the game properly.

“They have got good attacking options so we have to make sure we defend well, but when we go forward we have to make sure we cause them problems because we have got players who can do that.

“If we reach the levels I know we are capable of, we can certainly get a result there.”

Simpson’s main selection decision rests on whether to throw leading scorer Dave Hibbert back into a starting role after a two week injury absence, or stick with Waide Fairhurst and Nathan Elder.

Tomorrow’s game will have an extra edge as it represents the first in charge for County’s new boss Hans Backe, who assisted director of football Sven Goran Eriksson at Manchester City and Mexico.
