Bucks plan to work way up table
Friday 30th October 2009, 1:06PM GMT.
AFC Telford United have been warned to forget thoughts of an FA Cup upset next week and instead focus on turning around their stumbling league campaign.
The Bucks have an FA Cup first round clash against League Two Lincoln to look forward to in eight days time, but manager Rob Smith insists the Blue Square North double header before that are the only games on his mind.
Telford host Workington tomorrow before heading to Solihull Moors on Tuesday night.
And, while they have games in hand on the majority of the teams in the league, they begin the weekend in the bottom half of the table – six points off the bottom and nine adrift of the play-offs.
“To see us closer to the bottom of the table than the top is very disappointing and we need to start climbing the table quickly,” he said.
“Out of the next two games we need a minimum of four points, and ideally six, to start pushing us on.
“There are still a lot of points to play for and there is no doubt we can pull the gap back, but we have to start climbing the table quickly.”
Smith admitted Tuesday night’s 4-0 victory over Blyth in the FA Cup had given his side a huge boost.
“Last night was probably the happiest training session we have had all season and that’s understandable because Tuesday was a big relief,” he added.
“We were edgy during the first half against Blyth but when we went 2-0 up to the team, you could see some of the confidence coming back and hopefully that will continue.
“The key is that we take our chances and hopefully the strikers can took confidence from midweek.
“But tomorrow will be tough. Workington won at Droylsden a few weeks ago which takes some doing and they are always a hard-working side.”
Telford will have to cope without midfield duo Carl Rogers and Chris Nurse.
Nurse faces three weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring problem while Rogers will miss the next two games with a foot injury but will be given every chance to declare himself fit for the visit of Lincoln.
Lee Vaughan is available after serving a one-match suspension.
