Foul ‘sewage’ stench wafting across town
Thursday 29th October 2009, 6:01PM GMT.
An unpleasant smell is wafting over parts of Shrewsbury for the second time is as many months, residents said today.
Monkmoor and Mount Pleasant residents have been scratching their heads over a strong “sewage” smell.
The nasty odour was first noticed yesterday and has continued through the night, residents said.
Councillor Tony Durnell, member for Monkmoor, said he had noticed a smell in the area. He said: “I went for a walk last night and it wasn’t too bad at that time, but it is something we have noticed before. I think it is chicken muck at a farm and it can be quite strong.”
One Monkmoor resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was travelling along Telford Way at 7.30pm and noticed a very strong pungent smell.
“Later on I was driving through the Mount Pleasant and Monkmoor areas and it was even stronger, I can only really describe it as a vile stench.”
It is the second time in the past month that a bad smell has been noticed in the area.
Last month residents complained of a similar smell in the same area which was believed to be from a farmer spreading chicken muck on his fields and not digging it in quick enough.
Harlescott resident Beverley Marsh said: “You could smell it all across Harlescott, Monkmoor and Abbey Foregate.”
Jennifer Fullard, for Shropshire Council, said: “We encourage anyone concerned about pollution or any other public protection issue to contact us on 0345 678 9000.”
