Engineers were today carrying out urgent works on live overhead electricity cables in Newport to save the lives of eight young cygnets living underneath.

Workers from power distribution firm Central Networks were installing “bird diverters” on overhead cables above Newport Canal to stop the baby swans from flying into them as they attempt to flee the nest.
