Overseas pros on brink of ban

Tuesday 27th October 2009, 2:23PM GMT.

cricket-ballOverseas players could be banned from the Marston’s Shropshire Premier Cricket League next season – with a vote on the radical move taking place next month.

The proposal has been made by Albrighton Cricket Club and will be discussed at the league’s annual general meeting on November 30.

Several clubs in the county’s premier cricket competition have already made the move off their own back in a bid to bring finances under control in difficult times.

Nine of the 14 clubs in the league operated without an overseas pro last season, and the rest would be brought into line if the proposition is passed at the AGM.

And some of the other clubs did not use a pro for the whole season.

“Normally this would be discussed at our meeting in January,” said league chairman Mike Robinson.

“But we have decided to bring it forward to the AGM so clubs know where they stand if they are looking to make arrangements over the winter.”

Several top overseas stars have turned out in the Shropshire Premier League over the years, with West Indian Test players Jimmy Adams and Tino Best among the most eye-catching.

Adams helped Wroxeter win the title in 2001, while pace bowler Best – famously sledged by Andrew Flintoff while batting against England – turned out for Madeley.

Last season Much Wenlock secured an impressive top four finish with Indian professional Kuldeep Diwan making a huge impact.

Meanwhile, Trysull & Seisdon have had their promotion to the league confirmed, taking the place of bottom club Welshpool who have been relegated.

Trysull come up as champions of the FBC Manby Bowdler Shropshire League after winning all but one of their completed games.

With Oswestry going up to the Birmingham League and Newport coming back down, it means the league will operate with 14 teams in 2010 for the second consecutive season.

Teams will again have to play two rounds of Sunday fixtures, with the season once more starting a week earlier and finishing a week later than in years gone by – just as last season.

  • Ludlow’s Will Sparrow has been named the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League young player of the year.
