Mass rally to be discussed over turbine plans

Meetings to discuss a mass protest to prevent thousands of wind turbine lorries travelling through Welshpool will take place next month.
Councillors in Welshpool want to hold a “mass march” and hope members of the surrounding community councils will come and support them.
But Newtown Town Co- uncil last night said it would not support the march until it had more concrete evidence on where the proposed windfarm routes would be.
Council clerk Steve Geary said he had been invited to attend two meetings in Welshpool on November 17.
He said: “Welshpool Town Council are against any win- dfarm transportation travelling through their town and now want to hold a Montgomeryshire protest with other community councils.
“At the moment we don’t don’t know of any windfarm routes that will come throu- gh Newtown, because we have bridges that the lorries just won’t be able to get under.
“No routes have actually been confirmed yet and at present all windfarm applications are on hold until this issue can be sorted.
“I think we should attend the meeting in November, in which there are two on November 17, but don’t think we should pledge our support until we have some concrete evidence as to where these routes will be.”
Councillor Elinor Wright said: ” We should show some support and at least attend the meeting in November but until we have some concrete evidence then I don’t think we should do anything. We don’t know of any routes that are going to come through Newtown yet but this could all change.”
Welshpool town clerk Robert Robinson said invitations to a meeting to agree a “Montgomeryshire Protest” had been sent out.

The NIMBYs are at it again. We need more wind farms. We also need other sources of clean energy. Its unfortunate but unless Welshpool councillors expect everything to be flown in by Chinook helicopter, a short term increase in the numbers of lorries is ineviatable.
Before anyone asks, I would be happy to have a windfarm near me in Madeley. It would be better than that coal fired monstrosity down in Ironbridge or more nuclear powerstations dotted around the coast.
