Crowds descended on a north Shropshire village as a “secretly-built” wooden structure was set alight as part of a spectacular sculptural bonfire which sent flames shooting into the night sky.

They were in Welshampton for the village’s annual Festival of Fire on Saturday.

In the run-up to the spectacular, details of the event were kept under wraps so the village would not be swamped with huge crowds like last year, when about 3,500 spectators poured in.
