Event for Esme, 13, will fund new chair

Esme Ramsden 2A charity event has raised enough money for a partially paralysed Shropshire teenager to buy a new wheelchair.

Esme Ramsden, 13, of Belle Vue, Shrewsbury, suffered a brain tumour when she was five years old.

She was left partially paralysed on her left side and does not have proper use of her left hand and arm.

In May, the Dan Cassidy Swing Quartet held a concert at Rodington Village Hall and raised enough money for Esme to get a new lightweight wheelchair.

Nicola Pacult, a family friend, said: “As she does not have proper use of her left hand and arm, she cannot propel a wheelchair herself and relies on her mother and other people to push it.

“The new wheelchair replaces an older, heavier, less well-designed one, and should make life easier.

“Esme enjoys as normal a life as possible. She has a lively nature and is held in great affection by all who know her.

“The event was a great success, with a big crowd enjoying an evening listening to these talented musicians.

“A grand total of £448.40 was raised, with donations coming from as far afield as Pembrokeshire.

“Earlier this month, Esme finally found the right wheelchair to suit her – a lightweight, smart and comfortable chair made of dark red aircraft aluminium, with black seat and trim.

“Esme and her mother, Pauline, are delighted and her sister, Amy, is also extremely pleased.”
