Bucks facing tough replay warns Larry
Monday 26th October 2009, 2:37PM GMT.
Larry Chambers is urging AFC Telford United not to be complacent as they bid to set up an FA Cup first round clash with League side Lincoln City.
The Bucks managed to hold Blyth Spartans to a 0-0 draw in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday, despite having Gavin Hurren sent off with more than half an hour to go.
They will now replay back at the New Bucks Head tomorrow, with a visit from the Imps the prize on offer for the winners.
That would spark plenty of memories for Telford fans, whose side beat Lincoln at the same stage in the 1984-85 season, on the way to a memorable fifth round clash with Everton.
But assistant manager Chambers insists they can not think too far ahead, preferring to focus on getting past the Spartans first.
“We’re not going to get complacent and think we’re through to the next round already,” said Chambers.
“Blyth’s results when they play away are pretty good and they won’t be fazed by coming to us on a Tuesday night, they’ll just treat it as another game.
“I went to watch them at Salford (in the previous round) two weeks ago and I saw enough to know it will be a difficult game.”
Telford included new signing Chris Nurse in their starting line-up on Saturday, his international clearance coming through from Americas after his spell wityh Rochester Rhinos in the USL.
And Chambers was pleased with what he saw from Nurse, a former Hinckley and Tamworth midfielder and also a Guyana international.
“He did exactly what we expected,” said Chambers. “Chris, by his own admission, is not a fantastic footballer but he competes – he wins his headers, he wins his tackles and he’s very experienced.
“For the situation as it was in the second half he was exactly what we needed and it was a pleasing debut.”
- Telford were today awaiting confirmation from the FA that Hurren’s suspension would not kick in for 14 days, enabling him to play in tomorrow’s replay.
