police-car-lights1An elderly woman has died after the car she was travelling in crashed and ended up on its roof in a field in Shropshire. A man was also freed from the wreckage.

The news comes as police today revealed the driver of a car involved in a smash with a lorry at an accident blackspot on the Oswestry bypass on October 6 has since died.

Thomas Henry Allison, 79, of Llanfechain, was initially not believed to have been seriously hurt but died in hospital on October 12.

The woman involved in yesterday’s smash, which happened on the A4117 two miles from Hopton Wafers, near Cleobury Mortimer, was airlifted to Hereford County Hospital but died shortly after arriving.

Passers-by managed to free the woman and a man, who was also in the Suzuki Liana, shortly after the smash at 2.45pm.

The road was closed for more than seven hours while police accident investigators attended the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Thomas said: “Crews arrived to find a car on its roof in a field with two injured elderly occupants out of the vehicle. Passers-by had reportedly pulled the couple out of the car prior to the emergency services arriving.

“The woman, believed to be in her 80s, suffered a serious head injury and hip, ankle and chest injuries in the crash.

“Crews immediately commenced treatment at the scene, dressed her head wound, administered oxygen and immobilised her with a neck collar and spinal board.

“She was then airlifted to Hereford County Hospital.

“The man, also believed to be in his 80s, had a head and chest injury. He was treated at the scene and immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board before being taken to the same hospital.”
